What is AI calling?

AI calling is the use of an AI voice agent to make or answer business phone calls. It talks, listens and responds like a trained caller, and hands the call or the lead to your team when a person is needed.

The chat opens in a new tab. No sign-up needed.

The short answer

An AI calling agent is software that holds a phone conversation. It speaks in a natural voice, understands what the other person says, follows a script you approve and records what happened on each call. Businesses use it for calls that are frequent and similar: following up enquiries, reminders, confirmations and invitations.

What an AI calling agent does on a call

  1. Greets the person and says why it is calling.
  2. Asks short questions, one at a time.
  3. Understands the answers, including "call me later" or "not interested".
  4. Answers common questions from the information you provide.
  5. Books a slot, transfers the call to your team, or schedules a follow-up.
  6. Saves the outcome, often with a recording and a short summary.

Outbound and inbound calls

Outbound: the AI agent calls a list of people, such as new enquiries, customers due for a renewal or people invited to an event.

Inbound: it answers calls to your number, handles first questions such as timings or a booking request, and passes the caller to your team when needed.

How it differs from a telecalling team

An AI calling agent can make many calls in parallel and follows the script the same way every time. A good telecaller brings judgement, empathy and negotiation. Most businesses that use AI calling keep their team and move them to the calls that matter most: interested leads, complaints and closing. Compare them side by side.

What it needs from you

  • A clear goal for each campaign
  • A short script and answers to common questions
  • A list of people who expect to hear from you
  • Rules for when to transfer the call or stop calling
  • Someone on your team to take transfers and follow up

What to watch out for

  • Call only people who expect or have agreed to hear from you, and respect do-not-call requests
  • Follow the telemarketing rules and calling hours that apply to your type of call
  • Be honest about who is calling and why
  • Keep scripts short and clear
  • Review recordings and outcomes regularly

Questions people ask

Does the person know they are talking to an AI?

Voices today can sound very natural, so it is good practice to be open about it. Answer honestly if someone asks, and follow any disclosure rules that apply to you.

Can AI calling handle Hindi and Hinglish?

Many AI calling agents can speak Hindi and understand Hinglish replies. Check the languages and accents a provider supports, and test with real calls before you scale.

Which calls is AI calling not good for?

Calls that need negotiation, sensitive news, complaints or complex judgement are better handled by people. AI calling works best for frequent, similar conversations.
